How to Find Morel Mushrooms: Simple Spring Foraging Tips

Spring is morel mushroom season and the thrill of the hunt is alive in the woods. Discover easy foraging tips to help you find these wild treasures, connect with the rhythms of the land, and walk in step with the traditions of herbal wisdom. If you are hoping to find them this spring, keep these in mind:

  • Look after a warm rain when the forest breathes steam. I find mine after temps hit above 70 for a few consecutive days.
  • Wander near dead or dying elms, ash, poplars, and old apple trees.
  • Look in disturbed areas recently affected by flood or fire.
  • Look for areas with a good amount of leaf litter, but also where soil is exposed within.
  • Get low to the ground or on your knees to look at ground level to see them poking through the litter.
  • Don't look directly down, look about 5 ft on the ground in front of you. Scan slowly.
